When I was younger, my main two forms of transport were a bike and a skateboard. I was never great at skateboarding, but could get around on one. I would try a couple of small jumps and learned a trick or two. I also broke bones and probably ended up with a concussion or two. Yesterday I saw some skateboarders who defied gravity and sent themselves flying off the steps of the west entrance to the Valley View Casino Center, Some stuck the landing to the cheers of the crowd, others went tumbling across the black top, also to the cheers of the crowd.
I shot the event with the Nikon D750 and Nikon D4 camera bodies and the 70-200mm f/2.8, the 24-70mm f/2.8, and 16mm fisheye. Trying to get a good view of the action and keep the background uncluttered was a challenge. I shot all the images at f/2.8 tying use the depth of field to keep the focus on the skaters.
After the skaters competed going off the second set of steps, it was time to go all the way and use the ramp off the top flight of stairs. I won’t lie, these skaters are nuts.
Here are some of the less fortunate skaters…
