I wanted to expand a little on the borders I have been using in Silver Efex Pro 2. For this example I took an image of Rob Zombie from the 2010 Mayhem festival that was really frustrating me due to the solid green wash of light. This was taken at ISO 1600, f/2.8 and 1/250 of a second.

I really liked the look of the shot but hated the color. Enter Silver Efex Pro 2…

A few control points later, some structure added (including a boost to the fine structure, more on that later) and a border. Then I saved my work as a preset. This allowed me to open the image in Silver Efex Pro 2 again, apply all the same adjustments but vary the border.

I did this three times creating the same image with the same border setting but with three “variations” created by clicking on the Vary Border button. This creates a variation of the border, very useful for keeping the same look and feel but without having the exact same border.

As you can see, all the black and white versions have the exact same look but the borders are different. Just enough to make it look natural.

And here is the final version.
