Every year San Diego gets invaded by Super Heroes, Villains, Monsters, Storm Troopers, Vampires, Zombies, Cartoon Characters, Movie and TV Stars, Artists, Writers, Colorists, and more than a hundred thousand fans of the Comic Arts and Popular Culture. It’s Comic Con time in San Diego, my favorite time of year.
I have been going to the San Diego Comic Con every year since I was in high school back in the 1980s. I did miss a few here and there for things like college and my honeymoon, but for four days in July from early in the morning till quite late at night you can find me at The Con.
For the last eight or so years I have also been lucky enough o work as a photographer during the event, first covering as much as I could for the wire services, but for the last four years I have worked covering the Comic Con for Fox/FX. This year I again covered the event for Fox and FX and asked to work covering the Booth Signings on the convention floor. Over the course of three days I photographed the following casts: Archer, Bob’s Burger, Minority Report, Lucifer, Border Town, Family Guy, Last Man on Earth, Simpsons, Gotham, Scream Queens, The Strain, Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll, and American Horror Story. It was a wild time.
The gear I used this year was a two camera setup with the Nikon D750 and Nikon D4 with the 24-70mm and 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses and a SB-910. The real difference in this compared to past years was the relationship with he crew working the Fox booth on the convention floor. This was the fourth year working with them and I knew how to make it easier for their video crew and security and they knew what it was I needed. For the first time we managed to get a group shot of every signing in the booth and that would not have been possible with the great crew all working together.
For each of the casts that came through the booth, I tried to get individual shots and and some interaction with he fans or other cast members. I also had access to the top of the booth where I could get shots of the overall crowd at the signing.
The other side of the San Diego Comic Con for me is my fascination with people dressed in costumes and the great detailed figurines. I photograph both a lot during the week. Here are some of my favorite shots of the people and things at Comic Con including the very cool Scream Queens wrapped trolley.
