I love stand up comedy. I have seen a great many stand-up shows from small shows at comedy stores to really big shows at arenas. This past Saturday night I got to see, hear and photograph five more comics and it was a very funny night. The lineup for the show was George Lopez, Charlie Murphy, Eddie Griffin, D.L. Hughley, and Cedric the Entertainer. The shooting restrictions were 3 minutes per comedian from the soundboard, pretty standard for comedy shows. The nice part about this shoot was that the stage was in the middle of the arena floor making the 300mm f/4 a perfect choice with the Nikon D750. I also used the 24-70mm f/2.8 on the D4 for some wider views of the stage but since there was no backdrop, I shot very few wide shots.
First up was George Lopez, who also acted as MC for the night.
Next up was Charlie Murphy, the only comic on the bill that I had not heard before. He had a really great look, especially the red tie. Since the stage was set in the middle of the floor, the performers walked around the stage quite a bit, giving me a lot of different angles.
Next up was Eddie Griffin, a comedian that Comedy Central called one of the Top 100 Greatest Stand-Up Comedians of all time. I loved the fact that he had a very different look to the other comedians on the tour making him really fun to photograph.
D.L. Hughley is one of the original Kings of Comedy and was a contestant on Dancing with the Stars. His act was polished and very funny and the red suit was just plain fun to photograph.
Next up was Cedric the Entertainer, but before he took the show, George Lopez asked if everyone could take out their smart phones and turn on the flashlight. This made for a great photo and fun backdrop for the first seconds of his set.
Another great show at the Valley View Casino Center.
