October was a pretty slow month in 2013 concert wise for me. There was only one event at the Valley View Casino Center for me to shoot and that was a Rave. I did spend the time writing some ebooks, more on that later….
The Dada Life event on October 25 was a really interesting shoot since the main theme seemed to be bananas and champagne. Go figure.
Next up was a shoot with the really interesting Emilie Autumn at UCSD. Not only did I get to photograph her show (the whole show) but I also did a quick shoot in the afternoon with Emilie outside on the campus grounds. It was a blast. Emilie was a lot of fun to work with and I hope our paths cross again in the future.
Switchfoot is a San Diego based band that has a great new movie out called Fading West. They played the movie and performed for a sellout crowd at the Balboa Theatre on November 5. This was defiantly up there with my favorite shoots of the year.
Next up was Selena Gomez at the Valley View Casino Center. This was the second time I have photographed Selena and the stage setup up this time was much more difficult to work around. The only approved shooting position meant that we were photographing across the front of the stage. That meant every empty seat behind Selena showed up in the images, not a good look.
The San Diego Sockers kicked off their 2013/14 season on November 9. Shooting indoor soccer is tough. The game moves fast, and the lighting is pretty low. It took a while to get back in the swing of things.
Next up was the Maze: Give Love Tour 2013 which featured Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, The Whispers & Howard Hewett.
On November 21, I got to mark another act off that concert bucket list. I photographed Pearl Jam on their Lighting Bolt tour here in San Diego. Shooting conditions were less than ideal, but I didn’t care. It was Pearl Jam. One of those bands I really have always wanted to photograph. And I am really happy with the results.
Yes, all the photos are of Eddie, but that’s because he was the one in the light…
Next up at the Valley View Casino Center was Pepe Aguilar.
Followed by Michael Buble who decided that the best spot to photograph him was the rear corner of the venue. One of the nice surprises of the night was Naturally 7, the opening act.
That brings me to December where things picked up during the first week. I need up shooting 5 shows in 5 days with 17 different acts.
First up was the Tedeschi Trucks band with the London Souls as the opener at the Balboa Theatre.
Then i started a four night run at the Valle View Casino Center with Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, the 91X Holiday Bonus Show, Jay Z, and the 91X Wrex The Hall.
The final concert shoot for the year was Joe Bonamassa at the Valley View Casino Center.
There is still one more event that I have to shoot in 2013. A Rave on 12/30. I’ll add a couple from that when I get the chance.
All images were captured using Nikon Cameras and Lenses and Hoodman CompactFlash and SD cards and Sony XQD memory cards.
