Lil Wayne brought his I AM STILL MUSIC tour 2011 to San Diego last week and I was there to capture it. The shooting restrictions were the first three from the soundboard which was fine. I am getting used to the soundboard restrictions for shows in San Diego and even though I had already returned the 400mm f/2.8 to Nikon and I still have the 300mm f/4 in my lens collection. This lens is great for these shoots with the brightly lit stages and the relatively short distance from the front of the soundboard to the stage. Don’t get me wrong, I did miss the extra reach that the 400mm gave me, but I did not miss the weight or the size. The 400mm f/2.8 is a HUGE piece of glass especially compared to the 300mm f/4.
My other body was a D700 with a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens which gave me a wider angle of the stage. Two bodies came in handy since even though we had three songs to shoot, the media guide was never sure when that third song was over so I felt that we were being removed from the soundboard early but that’s the way it goes.
Taken with a Nikon D700 and a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens at 90mm 1/320 second f/2.8, ISO 1600
Nikon D3 300m f/4.0 1/320 second f/4 at ISO 1600
Nikon D3 300m f/4.0 1/320 second f/4 at ISO 1600
