I recently spent a day learning how to light using small flash units. The seminar was taught by David Hobby of Strobist fame. One of the images he used in his demonstration was of a floating lightbulb. The simplicity of the image was really striking and I decided to practice what he preached by re-shooting the floating light bulb.

The key to the photo is to figure out the light sources. There are 4.

  1. The light bulb itself
  2. SB-800 with snoot aimed at lightbulb base from right
  3. SB-800 with snoot aimed at lightbulb base from left
  4. SB-900 with snoot aimed at background
The rest is all about changing the power on the flash units.
Photoshop used to crop image and slight color correction.
