The Honda civic Tour 2014 stopped in Sn Diego last week. The tour this time around picked the Open Air Theatre at SDSU as the venue. The OAT is a very cool venue right in the middle of the SDSU campus. I really like the venue and hate the photo pit. For some reason, the pit is raised so you always feel like you are in the way of the fans. The lineup this time around was Tokyo Police Club, then Portugal. The Man followed by GroupLove. I have photographed GroupLove a couple of times before and they always put on a great performance. My history with Portugal. The Man was not quite that good. I had shot them once before at the local House of Blues and it was DARK…. really dark. So I really wasn’t expecting much. The good news was that Portugal. The Man was going to allow us to shoot their whole set, the first three from the pit, the rest from the soundboard. Sounded good to me.
First up was Tokyo Police Club. It was still early enough that the daylight was brighter than the stage lights.
After the Tokyo Police Club set was over, Portugal. The Man took the stage for their hour set. The lighting was tough… but I am pretty happy with what I got especially the full venue shots taken later in the set.
Next up was GroupLove, a high energy band that is really fun to photograph and I like their album. To make matters even better, they played two of my favorite songs in the first three.
