Have you heard of Emilie Autumn? She is a multi-talented performer who I got to photograph yesterday (October 26, 2013) before and during her show at Porter’s Pub on the UCSD campus. She writes, sings and plays the violin.

The afternoon started with a quick photo shoot at the venue.  Actually the shoot ended up outside the venue in one the  eucalyptus groves on the campus. Emilie was awesome. Happy to be there posing in her new t-shirt and yielding a stick she found. I used a combination of the natural cloud cover and a couple of Nikon Sb-800 speed lights triggered with the SU-800 commander unit on a Nikon D4.

We discussed her world domination plans. We discussed the heat in Florida. Her World Domination plans were more interesting.

Photographing Emilie was a little like trying to ride a tornado. Best to let it be and capture the force of nature as it shows.

After a great shoot, Emilie had to run and I took a break before the live show later that night.

The show was tough to shoot. The lights were dim and the stage was small. No photo pit and the die-hard fans packed the front. Still, a good shoot especially when I pushed the Nikon D4 to ISO 3200 and 6400.

The show is based abound her autobiographical novel, The Asylum for Wayward Victorian Girls, which was published in 2010. It is one hell of a show….

I hope to see this show again in the future, preferably on a much bigger stage. Would love to see what they could have done given more space to play with.
