Lukas Nelson concert shoot

I have had the privilege of photographing Lukas Nelson three times now. Each time was decidedly  different from the previous. The first time was with his dad back in 2007, the second was with his band at Stagecoach in 2011 and the third was on Wednesday night where he performed solo and acoustic. Three very different performances and I have to say that while the high energy stage presence Lukas has when playing with his band is great to photograph, the solo performance was really cool. The intimate nature of the show made it very enjoyable to...

Best of 2011

Best of 2011

These are my favorites from this year. I usually don’t do this type of post but some images this year just stood out to me for a variety of reasons… Here they are.. My favorite photo of 2011 is this shot of Billy Morrison and his Signature Gibson Les Paul. The photo was taken outside the Gibson showroom in Beverly Hills between filming breaks. The Gibson folks were filming a series of interviews with billy to run on the Gibson site and during the breaks, I posed Billy around the room and took some portraits. This area was outside...

Camp Freddy, the end of the Roxy 2011 Residency

Camp Freddy, the end of the Roxy 2011 Residency

Friday, December 23 was the final show of the 2011 Camp Freddy Residency at the Roxy. Each week had brought an eclectic setlist and great group of guests to the stage at the legendary Roxy in Los Angeles. Week 4 would be no different. The curtain went up to the now familiar Frankie Goes to Hollywood hit Relax. And since it seems that most of the audience were there for their second, third or fourth time, they went nuts. The final setlist was as follows (to the best of my memory and notes) Relax 20th Century Boy Rock and Roll Star (Dominic...

Are you ready for some Football?

Are you ready for some Football?

I get asked how I get to shoot the concerts I do all the time. Many times it’s about who you know. Never has that been more true than the story behind how I got to photograph the Poinsettia Bowl here in San Diego on December 21, 2011. The short and honest answer is that a friend hooked me up with the media credential. He went to one of the schools playing in the game and had the connections. I have not shot a lot of football in the past, and the football I have shot was not on this level or on this size playing field. I was nervous...

Camp Freddy are Sharp Dressed Men

Week three of the Camp Freddy residency at the Roxy and the rumors of who the guests are fly around the crowd. The one thing we all know for sure is that Frankie Perez will be there since his band is opening the show (and they did a fantastic job). The other guests are still a mystery…. The room is full, the crowd is patient until the opening chords of Relax start to come from the stage. For the third week the band starts off with a loud, driven, extremely fun version of the Frankie goes to Hollywood tune. The core band members strut...

Camp Freddy: Anarchy at the Roxy

Week two of the annual Camp Freddy Residency at the Roxy started off with Billy Morrison, Matt Sorum, and Donovan Leitch Jr. on guitar, drums and vocals and joined by Steve Stevens on lead guitar and Chris Wyse on bass. The opening number, Relax was the same as the week before, but then he show went off in a totally different direction. The bland played a great version of the White Stripes 7 Nation Army followed by the T-Rex classic  20th Century Boy and Search and Destroy, both tunes with Neon Trees singer Tyler Glenn and Branden...

Night and Low-Light Photography Photo Workshop

I am very happy to announce that my new book, Night and Low-Light Photography, Photo Workshop is about to hit the store shelves. As I write this it is already available as an ebook for the Kindle, iBooks, and the nook and will be shipping from Amazon, Barnes and Noble and other retailers before the end of the month. There are sections on...

Camp Freddy rocks the Roxy

Camp Freddy rocks the Roxy

Camp Freddy kicked off their 2011 residency at the Roxy on Friday night and it was a rocker. Camp Freddy is a cover band. They play songs they like and the set list ranges from Frankie Goes to Hollywood to Ozzy Osbourne and even an acoustic Oasis tune. And while the music is really fun to listen to, it is the names on the stage and the energy they bring that makes these shows so special. Lets start with the core band; On guitar is Billy Morrison and Dave Navarro, on drums there is Matt Sorum, bass is covered by Chris Chaney and vocals are...
