Smashing Pumpkins concert shoot

Last night I had the opportunity to photograph the Smashing pumpkins in concert at UCSDs’ RIMAC Arena. I was asked by the venue to photograph the band for use in promotional material by the venue and as a print for the venue offices.
The photo pass request was approved by the Smashing Pumpkins and I was sent a [...]

Gov’t Mule concert shoot

Back in 1989, The Allman Brothers added guitarist Warren Haynes and bassist Allen Woody.  These two, along with drummer Matt Abts, got together when the Allman Brothers band had the day off  to play in a power trio called Gov’t Mule. Since that time, Gov’t Mule has gone through a lot of changes, beginning with the death [...]

Pixel Bender

I just read on John Nacks Blog that pixel Bender is now available for download from Adobe Labs. The first question you might have is, “What is Pixel Bender ?”
Pixel Bender
Pixel Bender is a new technology from Abobe that “delivers a common image and video processing infrastructure which provides automatic runtime optimization on heterogeneous hardware.”  What that [...]

“Common Cents”

One of the advantages to being part of the NPPA (National Press Photographers Association) is the News Photographer magazine that shows up every month. The first column I read every month is by Mark Loundry and is called Common Cents. Mark finishes off each column with The Good, The Bad & The Ugly to do [...]

Friday Night Lights

I recently sent the afternoon and evening at Chaparral High School in Temecula CA. I was there as a favor to a friend who coaches one of the Puma volleyball teams. I was there to shoot some volleyball and since it was Friday, I was given field access to shoot the football game that night.
I learned two very important things during [...]

Dickey Betts, Crowded House and Blues Traveler, both at Humphreys from the 2007 concert season.
The photos can be [...]

Strobist Los Angeles Lighting Seminar

On Sunday morning I gave up my usually Football and friends routine and instead got up real early and drove up to Los Angeles. The reason for this really odd behavior was David Hobby, a long time newspaper photographer and the creator of Strobist.com.
David was holding a one day lighting seminar in Los Angeles on [...]

Thanks and answers

I would like to thank all the folks who read my guest blog over at Photoshop Insider and left those wonderful comments.  I thought I would address some of the question over here.

The three song limit is real. There are times when the limit could be as little as 30 seconds, and others where the [...]

32GB CompactFlash

Just when I thought 8GB was a big card, along came the 16GB cards and now SanDisk has upped the ante one more time by announcing the 32GB Extreme III CompactFlash Card.

It does seem that the card is aimed towards the video market, but with the video capability of the Nikon D90 and rumors of the Canon [...]

Sony A700 Firmware Update

I use the Sony A700 and I am always on the outlook for updates to the firmware from Sony. With the release of the A900, a firmware upgrade to the A700 was leaked and downloaded.
This has prompted a reply from Sony to be posted here: http://news.sel.sony.com/electronicsblog/?p=30

“UPDATE: September 9, 2008
Hello again from Mark Weir, in Sony’s Digital Imaging group.
Since [...]
